Spirit of DI Awards -
The Spirit of DI Award is given in recognition of those who act as superior role models in the areas of spirit, sportsmanship and volunteerism. Grapevine High School - Team Award - Chorific Instant Challenge We were impressed with this team's enthusiasm, energy level, creativity, sportsmanship and cooperative team work. They stood out from the rest in these areas. The team entered the room excited to meet their challenge and exited with just as much enthusiasm even when one of their towers fell over at the last second before measurement by appraisers. Holy Trinity Catholic School - Team Award - Hit or Myth Instant Challenge This team remained upbeat and positive throughout their instant challenge. Team members engaged one another, i.e. "don't give up!", "believe in our team!". were just a couple of the comments made. Incredible Teamwork. Colleyville Middle School - Team Award - Switch We would like to nominate this team for their determination and tenacity when it came to meeting the specifications. Even though they had to make multiple last minute adjustments they came in and performed with much enthusiasm and perseverance. The appraisal team applauds this team in their task resolution in difficult circumstances and time constraints. Hill Elementary - Team Award - Hit or Myth Instant Challenge This team showed extreme enthusiasm, unending support for each other and their unique approach to using their "thinking on your feet" skill. They worked as a cohesive unit where laughter was universal through out the challenge. They brought an awakening of the Spirit of DI to the new appraisers and a reawakening to the experienced appraisers. They were a true joy to watch!
Renaissance Award
The Renaissance Award is given for outstanding skill in the areas of engineering, design or performance. Colleyville MS - Team Award - ML Obstacles of Course This team used exceptional creative engineering and workmanship incorporating three obstacles into one structure. The structure consisted of steps that led up to a gap which covered a tunnel. The team built the three-in-one obstacle completely out of wood with a high level of craftsmanship, quality and construction. The team scaled the obstacles to match the dimensions and unique abilities of their vehicle. Great Ingenuity and Effort! Congratulations! Samuel Janvier - Individual Award - EL Hit or Muth The Kelpie group from Walker Creek did an outstanding job. We are nominating Samuel Janvier for his wonderful portrayal of the Scottish grandson. He added dialect that was quite convincing. Samuel's state presence and leadership were remarkable. The team fed off his energy and enthusiasm. His effort and presentation showed research about Scotland and incredible adlibbing abilities. He adjusted his kilt and made a joke about it. the grandpa's hat fell of and he incorporated it and kept the show going. Samuel deserves this Renaissance award for his stage presence and outstanding effort. He made the team better and was a terrific individual. Stonegate Elementary - Team Award - EL Hit or Myth The creative use of recycled materials to have a Phoenix with flapping wings was an outstanding combination of engineering, design, and artistic presence. Dove Elementary - Team Ward - EL Hit or Myth The participants created a wonderful atmosphere in their presentation. The use of cultural elements contributed to an outstanding performance (round belly on chef because of the amount of pasta eaten in Italy, the accents they had practiced.) The performance flow was very cohesive and executed well. The participants were very articulate and they projected better than other groups we saw. The leaning tower of Pisa was constructed extremely well. The process they went through to design it was incredible. They first tried it with paper towel rolls cut in half but realized that the pieces were not even. They then decided to user small toilet paper rolls. Overall, an excellent performance. T.J. Durkin - Individual Award - EL Obstacles of Course The vehicle that TJ drove for team Bransford Elementary was an exceptional piece of engineering. After talking with him (TJ), it was clear he was the main designer/ builder. It was the only car/vehicle all day that was a completely original design. He assembled the entire thing from spare parts (no kits or rc car). His mastery of the mechanics and electrical functionality was unmatched by any one person or team the entire day. He truly embodied the spirit of this challenge and fully deserves this award. Grace Lutheran - Team Award - EL Chorific This team had an excellent presentation. The performance was sharp and their message was clear. Each member of the team performed their part with creativity and excellence. The props created by the team were unique and were used in an unusual way to bring out the elements of their story line. Martin High School - Team Award - SL Switch We would like to nominate this team for their exceptional engineering ability when it came to the design of a working music instrument and elevating, rotating platform. The musical instrument represented a music boxes music maker. The platform rotated while elevating a ballerina, like in a music box. As a team, they could describe how all of the parts of the system worked together. The appraisal team was unanimous in selecting this team for the Renaissance Award. Colleyville Elementary - Team Award - EL DI've Got a Secret Since the write up for this award describes in fair detail the team's solution - we will defer including the nomination write up until after competition is complete.
DaVinci Awards
The DaVinci Award is given for having a unique approach to a solution, for risk taking, and/or for outstanding creativity (not skill or talent). Haltom High School - Team Award - SL Chorific (Instant Challenge) This teams solution was the most creative. The teams creativity came from bases or foundations in their task. Without a base, the task would be incomplete able. They were the only team to use the balloons and make it work with the most creative base of the day. There tower was a spaceship out of balloons using straws as a launching pad. OC Taylor Elementary (TM Kozakis) - Team Award - EL Obstacles As an appraisal team we appreciated the creativity, teamwork and concept development. Their ability to articulate the progression of the story and the reason for these changes was impressive. The creative use of materials to develop obstacles, relevant to their life experiences was a true example of the creativity sought by DI.
Daniels Elementary - Team Award - EL Hit or Myth Since the write up for this award describes in fair detail the team's solution - we will defer including the nomination write up until after competition is complete. Little Elementary - Team Award - EL Chorific We recommend Little Elementary for this award based on their outstanding creativity. They performed four different songs as part of their skit - fitting each song to their current "situation" in the skit. One song "You've Got to Work It Out," from High School Musical was sung by all group members as an effort to make their chores more fun and time go by quicker in getting them done. The other three songs were re-written lyrics (by the team) to existing songs. Very creative and entertaining. Their performance was very mature for their age. Fantastic! |
